What is a Klondike Derby?

This is a Webelos event loosely based on the Klondike Gold Rush. The event is run in conjunction with the Boy Scout Klondike Derby and the Webelos will have the opportunity to observe the Scouts in action. The Webelos Patrol will be asked to assist in preparing a sled with their patrol or den using the supply list. On the day of the event, the boys will participate in activities highlighting the skills they have learned as Webelos. The focus of the stations will be on working together. Each station the Patrol encounters will have a clear set of directions and the station masters will award nuggets. After a provided lunch, the day will end with a race (rush for the gold). Trophies will be awarded to the top 4 patrols in each division.

Who can participate?

Any Webelos may compete as a member of a team.
Divisions:
First-Year Webelos
Second-Year Webelos
First and Second-Year Webelos Combined

Teams must have a minimum of three and a maximum of eight boys with a minimum of two adults per sled. In addition, each Pack should have at least one volunteer to run a station for the event.

How should we prepare?

The activities in this event are based on the material in the Webelos Handbook. In keeping with the Klondike theme, the application of knowledge will be critical. For example, knowing how to tie a clove hitch will not earn points, but using one to create a tool could be essential for survival.

Can the Boys use the Webelos Handbook or other references?

Since this is a learning event, using a reference is permitted but there will be a price to pay! As was the case in the Klondike, those who weren’t prepared could usually buy what they needed but at a high cost. Each team will be given a summary sheet for each station and can review their handbook before the station without penalty. Adults may offer support and guidance but Webelos should be allowed to try on their own first. This event is a game with a purpose, so come prepared to play or be prepared to pay.

What will we need to bring?

Each team must have a sled with two adults and provide at least one adult station judge to be allowed to complete. Plans for a typical sled and a list of equipment are attached. Don’t forget snacks and water (the boys will be active) to supplement the provided lunch. Lunch will be provided at noon.

Are uniforms required?

Uniforms are not required! Dress for the weather! Layer, layer, layer, layer! Boys may wish to bring a change of clothes and socks and shoes should they get wet. Preparation is the key to a fun day outdoors. Boots or hiking shoes are required. No one will be permitted to complete in sneakers or other light footwear.

Do we need a sled?

Each team must have a sled. The Webelos den may choose to build a sled and then leave it for future Webelos or take it forward to a troop that does not have one. Should the den need assistance, this may be an activity with which a troop can assist the den and the Boy Scouts work with the Webelos in building one. A plastic sled at least 4 feet long with slight sides may be used for a den that is unable to build a sled.

Can the sled have wheels?

Based on historical fact, Klondike sleds did have removable wheels. Your sleds may have two wheels mounted on a common axle. The wheels and axle must be easily removable. The axle must not have protruding sharp edges and must be securely attached to the sled (not lashed or duct taped.) Large diameter wheels near the balance point of the sled work best.

How do we register?

Fill out the attached form and get it to the council office with payment by the deadline. No registrations will be accepted after the deadline unless you have made prior arrangements with the Klondike Coordinator.
